Selection of composite materials, development of rubber compound & its component :
components of rubber composite will be such that it provides most important properties such as high strength, abrasion resistance, resistance to flex cracking and dynamic properties, resistance to cut initiation, cut growth, water, weather resistance, heat, ozone and ageing resistance etc. The natural or synthetic rubbers or blends of both the type of rubbers will be u
sed to develop the rubber compound to enhance its life during the application. The other suitable compounding ingredients shall be selected to achieve all above mentioned critical properties. Using expertise and vast experience of scientists of IRMRA, the selection of right quality and quantity of compounding ingredients will be achieved. While selection of rubber or blends
of rubber and oth
er ingredients, the national resources available in the country will be given utmost importance to achieve th
e best optimum properties. Natural rubber (India is 4th largest producer) has got excellent properties such as strength, abrasion resistance etc. except oil, weather and ageing (ozone & heat) resistances. IRMRA has already developed tec
hnologies to improve such properties using protective chemical and a patent also has been filed on ozone resistance of natural rubber. Such technological input will be used to develop the compound formulation. IRMRA scientists have got vast experience in the processability studies of rubber and using their expertise, an appropriate compounds would be formulated that has better posibilities and safety. Various attempts will be made to achieve blend compatibility, better dispersion of reinforcing fillers, homogenous mixing of all compounding ingredients to improve the quality. IRMRA scientists have already successfully developed such type of products like large size of belts for sealing application as required by Indian defence sectors. So, the concept of attempting to improve the quality is very much known to IRMRA scientists.

Reinforcing materials will be selected based on Fibre type, fabric strenght, yarn and fabric consturction parameter.

Exploring the suitability of core yarn with emphasis on natural fibres for developmet of solid woven carcass for conversion into rubber dam fabric.

Process Development: Homogeneous dispersion of rubber compounding ingredients using modern mixing technology. Coating of fabric and adhering of plies to form consolidated composite having no leak under required pressure to be developed.

We propose a novel idea of proper designing of vulcanisation process and die to mould the composite. Proper step curing, joining of several plies of fabric and moulding of rubber alongwith the fabric of large size having high joint strength will be part of the proposed R&D. IRMRA has already developed large size strips of rubber fabric composites. The adhering of these large strips to further lengthening the sheets to form a bag, designing of a process are component activities in the project.
