Dr. P. Thavamani, Director |
Dr. P.Thavamani is the Director of IRMRA and he is over all responsible for IRMRA as Chief Executive. He joined IRMRA as Director from Dec. 2009.
He has done M.Sc., from Madurai Kamaraj University and got Gold Medal as he stood First in the University, and cash awards for securing the highest marks in each paper. He has got M.Tech., and Ph.D in Rubber Technology from IIT Kharagpur and received INCAB RUBBER PRIZE for securing the First Rank in M.Tech. |

He is a member of American Chemical Society – Rubber Division, Bureau of Indian Standards, Indian Rubber Institute, and he served as the Honorary Secretary of IRI Madurai – Sub branch.
He has published and presented more than twenty research and review technical papers in various journals, conferences, seminars and workshops. He has guided more than ten B.Tech and M.Tech., students from MIT, Chennai, cochin University, IIT.Kharagpur, for successfully completing their projects.
He has developed many critical products for many industrial & automotive rubber component manufacturers. He worked in M/s. Roulunds India Pvt. Ltd., as Manager – R&D fro about two years. Then he worked for about 11 years in Fenner (India) Ltd., as Sr. General Manager – R & D. He visited many reputed global belting manufacturers, raw material suppliers, research laboratories, machinery suppliers. Lastly, he was working in M/s.Pix Transmission Ltd., as Vice Presedient – R &D. and Technical before joining IRMRA. |

| He has received his Ph.D from Rubber Technology Center, IIT Kharaghpur in the field of structure property relation of Rubber vulcanizate with special reference to carboxylated Nitrile Rubber in 1982. He had worked with different projects during his post doctoral research work in IIT Kharaghpur, especially in Cryogrinding of rubber, Thermoplastics vulcanizate and Applications of SEM in Fractography. His group was awarded 'DUNLOP' award by IRMRA in 1983 for their SEM study in Fractography. |

Dr.Chakraborty had joined J.K. tyre Ltd. in 1983 in their Research & Development department and worked for four years. He had developed low rolling resistance tread compound and non -destructive testing technologies of tyre both in development and service prediction. He later on joined Synthetics & Chemicals Ltd., at Delhi, the largest manufacturer of synthetic Rubber, in their marketing division. During his fourteen years of service at Synthetics & Chemicals Ltd, he worked in different capacities - Technical service Manager, Regional Manager, Chief Manager - Business Development, Head - Application Research Centre.
His name is listed in worlds Who's Who and International bibliographical centre in 1997. He has taken special training in Phillips carbon black Sales & Marketing in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Delhi and Kaizen from Bombay Management Association.
He is also technical committee member of IRI & AIRIA and approved Ph.D. Guide of M.G. University. Before joining IRMRA in 2000, he was associated with different non- tyre industries especially auto component, Rail pads, foot wear, floor tiles, for project and product development. He has delivered several lectures on various topics in various training programmes conducted by IRMRA.He is a certified lead auditor for ISO-9001-2000. |

He also carried out a Design of a batch reactor for mfg of Di butyl Phthalate (1 Ton capacity) as part fulfillment of his B.Tech Course. He has 23 yrs hands on industrial experience and occupied senior positions like CEO, GM (Works), GM (Tech) etc. in reputed industries all over India.
During the tenure of his service with different rubber industries he has developed many products like
- Rubber components for air brake equipments for Wagon, carriage & locomotive as per Wabco Spec. & air brake hose conforming to American Railway spec. M601-76 for Indian railways.
- Wear resistant rubber & polyurethane (cast) liner & screen deck for material handling equipment like mechanical / electromagnetic feeder & vibratory screen.
- Synthetic rubber gasket (Single & dual hardness) for PVC & ductile iron pipe being used in water/waste water industries conforming to UL/NSF & ASTM F 477-93 spec.
- KITMELT Sheet (under seal/sound deadeners) for automobile industries.
- Double layer fuel tube based on NBR-PVC (inner tube) & Hypalon (outer cover) for two-wheeler industries like Bajaj auto, Hero Honda etc.
- Heat Shrinkage butyl sealant tape for DOT (Dept. of Telecommunication), air condition & refrigerator manufacturers etc.
- Petrol and Disel hose for oil companies
- Various types of hoses , gaskets and metal – rubber bonded items for auto mobile industries
He also did wonderful job in the field of cost reduction through rejection control, value engineering, scrap utilization & productivity increase through process mechanization for different rubber industries.
Besides, he also implemented different quality system like ISO 9002, QS 9000, and TPM during his tenure with different rubber industry.
At IRMRA he organized various Seminars / Training programmes in different metro cities all over India on basic Rubber Technology / Design and Development of Rubber products for automotive ,industrial and defence applications, Indigenization of rubber products through reverse engineering, Testing and Life Estimation of Rubber Products, Processing technique and trouble shooting etc.

Mr. P.K. Das, Deputy Director is head of testing department at IRMRA. He has done M. Tech in rubber technology from IIT, Kharagpur in 1993. He did his M.Tech project work on "Studies on the effect of dry bonding system on adhesion between rubbers and organic/inorganic fibres" at Phoenix Yule Limited previously known as Andrew Yule & Company Limited, kalyani, West Bengal. During his short tenure with rubber industry he has worked on development of various rubber products like rubber rolls and automotive rubber components.
He joined IRMRA in 1995. At IRMRA, he has worked extensively on various thermal, dynamic and analytical techniques for testing and characterization of rubber/polymer compounds and products. He was instrumental in creating dynamic testing facility in IRMRA. He has taken advanced training on dynamic mechanical analysis and polymer processability at M/s Metravib, France and M/s Brabender, Germany respectively. He has also developed methods for quantitative analysis of unknown rubber blends using thermal and analytical techniques.
He has been involved in indigenization of various rubber products for defence especially rubber mounts and bearings. He has successfully developed rubber bearing of 12T capacity for seismic application for BARC. He has expertise on service life estimation of rubber products like seals, gaskets, LPG hose, rubber mounts etc. and completed several projects supported by defence and private sectors.
His research work includes development of heat and oil resistant thermoplastic elastomers from elastomer-thermoplastic blends using high energy electron beam radiation. He has been part of a pioneering research work, on improvement of tyre quality and productivity through electron beam processing of tyre components, in the country. |
